Google Apps Script allows you to programmatically create and modify Google Docs,as well as customize the user interface with new menus, dialog boxes, andsidebars.
The basics
Apps Script can interact with Google Docs in two broad ways: any script cancreate or modify a document if the script's user has appropriate permissions forthe document, and a script can also bebound to a document, which givesthe script special abilities to alter the user interface or respond when thedocument is opened. To create a container-bound script, selectTools > Script editor from within Google Docs.
In either case, it's simple to interact with a Google Doc through Apps Script'sDocument Service, as the following exampledemonstrates.
The script above creates a new document in the user's Google Drive, then insertsa paragraph that contains the same text as the document's name, styles thatparagraph as a heading, and appends a table based on the values in atwo-dimensional array. The script could just as easily make these changes to anexisting document by replacing the call to
DocumentApp.create()
with DocumentApp.openById()
or openByUrl()
.For scripts created inside a document (container-bound), useDocumentApp.getActiveDocument()
.Structure of a document
From Apps Script's perspective, a Google Doc is structured much like an HTMLdocument—that is, a Google Doc is composed of elements (like a
Paragraph
orTable
) that often contain otherelements. Most scripts that modify a Google Doc begin with a call togetBody()
, because theBody
is a master element thatcontains all other elements except for theHeaderSection
,FooterSection
, and anyFootnotes
.However, there are rules about which types of elements can contain other types.Furthermore, the Document Service in Apps Script can only insert certain typesof elements. The tree below shows which elements can be contained by a certaintype of element.

Replacing text
Apps Script is often used to replace text in Google Docs. Let's say you have aspreadsheet full of client information and you want to generate a personalizedGoogle Doc for each client. (This type of operation is often called a mailmerge.)
There are many ways to replace text, but the simplest is the
replaceText()
method shown in the example below. replaceText
supports mostof JavaScript's regular expression features. The first function belowadds several lines of placeholder text to a Google Doc; in the real world, youwould be more likely to type the placeholders into the document yourself. Thesecond function replaces the placeholders with properties defined in theclient
object.Note that both of these functions use the
getActiveDocument()
method, which only applies to scripts created inside a Google Doc; in astand-alone script, useDocumentApp.create()
,openById()
,or openByUrl()
instead.Custom menus and user interfaces
You can customize Google Docs by adding menus, dialog boxes, andsidebars. Keep in mind, however, that a script can only interact with the UI forthe current instance of an open document, and only if the script isbound to the document.

Add-ons for Google Docs
Add-ons run inside Google Docs and can be installedfrom the Google Docs add-on store. If you've developed a script for Google Docsand want to share it with the world, Apps Script lets youpublish your script as anadd-on so other users can install it from the add-on store.

Triggers
Scripts that are bound to a GoogleDoc can use a simple trigger to respondto the document's
onOpen
event, whichoccurs whenever a user who has edit access to the document opens it in GoogleDocs.To set up the trigger, just write a function called
onOpen()
. The menu codeabove shows an example of this trigger. Although the simple trigger is usefulfor adding menus, it cannot use any Apps Script services that requireauthorization.Work from home has enabled a new workflow for the majority of folks. Sharing sensitive documents and passing files among employees online has become a bit stressful. Most companies use Google Docs as it’s web-based and comes with superior collaborating and sharing capabilities. If you are sharing private or confidential documents, then it’s always advisable to add a company logo or other warning as a watermark to a Google Docs document.
Whether you want to claim the exclusivity on a document or trying to make it look a little prettier, there are many reasons to add something authoritative or eye-catching in Google Docs.
Unlike Microsoft Word, there is no official solution to add a watermark in Google Docs. But there is a workaround you can try instead.

Google Drawing is an integral part of Google Docs. It helps you create charts, diagrams, and basic images that you can use inside other Google apps.
First, you need to have a company logo or image that you would like to use as a watermark. Now follow the steps below.
Step 1: Visit Google Drawing on the web. I know you can access Google Drawing from Google Docs as well. But here, you need to use the Google Drawing web app to make necessary adjustments to a watermark image.
Step 2: Tap on Insert in the menu bar.
Step 3: Add an image or text to Google Drawing canvas.
Step 4: Adjust the image size and position. You can also rotate an image for a more professional look.
Step 5: A Watermark must be transparent so that it doesn’t mess up with other content on the document. Select the image and tap on Format > Format Options.
Step 6: From there, look for Adjustments. Adjust the Transparency level of your image. You can also adjust the brightness and contrast. Under Format Options, you can edit other features of your image.
If you are using text then I would advise you to change the text color to mild-grey so that it goes well behind the document.
Step 7: Once you’re done, add a name to your drawing in the Untitled Drawings box in the top-left.
Step 8: Your drawing will be saved automatically to your Google Drive storage, so return to your Google Docs document at this point.

Place Watermark in Google Docs
Let me get one thing straight. You can’t place the drawing behind any text. You will need to use it as a header or footer in the document.
Step 1: Open a blank Google Doc document.
Step 2: Press Insert > Headers & Footers, choosing either the Header or Footer options.
Step 3: With your header or footer option, press Insert > Drawing > From Drive to add your drawing.
Step 4: In the Insert Drawing box, select your saved Google Drawings image and then press the Select button to add it to your document.
Step 5: The drawing will be inserted into your header or footer at this point. Resize your image using the border resize options, then move your image using your mouse or trackpad to a suitable position.
If you can’t move the drawing, you’ll need to select it and click on the Wrap Text option.
Now, you will see the added watermark image or text on all Google Docs pages.
Save the Document as Template
You won’t want to go through the lengthy process of adding a watermark to a Google Docs document. You can save the doc as a template and use it again in the future.
After making necessary changes, tap on the move folder menu and save the file in a Google Drive folder. Now, remember that this is your main watermark file in Google Docs. You shouldn’t make any changes to the original file.
Whenever you want to use the template to create a quick document, then follow the steps below.
Step 1: Visit Google Drive on the web and find the template that you want to use.
Step 2: Open the template in Google Docs.
Step 3: Don’t make any change now as it will mess up the original custom document.
Step 4: Instead, tap on File > Make a copy and save it in Google Drive.
Now go ahead, and edit the necessary details in the template, and you are good to go.
